COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Officials within Texas A&M University Transportation Services presented five roadway projects they’re undertaking to the College Station Council Transportation and Mobility Committee on Tuesday.
The goal of these projects is to improve campus connectivity and minimize traffic. Doing so has been a project years in the making as staff shared they’ve consulted with a number of stakeholders on these projects.
The most impactful will see the creation of a centralized bus hub near Old Main Drive and the Memorial Student Center with all bus routes originating from this location. This project also includes bus shelters, widened sidewalks, and a wheeled device path connecting Academic Plaza to west campus.
Parking Projects and Maintenance Manager Randy Harrison told the committee this plan may help alleviate some traffic concerns.
According to Harrison, routes will follow, “around Simpson Drill Field, closer to MSC, and it will create more efficient routes and have everybody focused in one place.”
These projects are set to be complete by the fall semester, in time for football season.
Penberthy Boulevard will double in size, expanding from two lanes to four lanes. Paths for pedestrians and scooters would also be added.
Another will reconfigure traffic lanes around the Stallings Boulevard Garage, adding another traffic lane and creating more walking paths.
On Ross Street, public access will be restricted to make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
“Eliminate that, what we call ‘kiss and drops,’ and [reduce] vehicular traffic to a heavily pedestrian area,” Harrison added.
Near the post office, North Houston Street will get a makeover to make the area more ADA accessible.
